Shawnee - First Encounters
My name is Damien, I'm the Constable of Shawnee. You are in the human kingdom of Yorwyn under King Dunnegan.
I arrived at the new settlement of Shawnee after fleeing Angmare. There was trouble in that city for the homeless and orphans left out on the streets. I don't know what happened, but they were rounding people up and either throwing them out of the city or into prison. Leaving seemed like the best option and I had read King Dunnegan's announcement of this new place. Things have changed a lot for me in a short time. Where I once did whatever was needed to survive, I am now a figure of some authority. This is definitely going to take some getting used to.
"Village" is a generous term for Shawnee. There is an inn and a clearing, and little else. For the first time, I saw new kinds of people. Elves, I have seen before. I have only heard about Fae. Mostly I was told they were monsters, but I’m fairly certain the people who said that have never seen one. It turns out Fae have a wide variability. There is a darkling Fae I eventually made a trade with. And there are several very colorful Fae. There is even one, Musica, who can't hear anything. She can talk with her hands to another Fae, Cassia. Now Cassia is… Cassia. You'll know when you meet her.
There are several humans here as well. The inn is run by an elf woman, Bryn. She seems nice enough and keeps busy gathering the supplies she needs for all of us. Most elves are arrogant, or so I've heard. I never had much opportunity to interact with them before. One elf, Deirdre, does not seem arrogant to me, not any more than anyone else. Though she barely speaks common, she is clearly intelligent. She eventually joined the town guard, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
The Thane over this area, Thane Morgan, arrived at the inn my first night here. She did not seem happy to be here. I've seen people like her before. People like Thane Logan MacGuire, who runs Angmare and the area around that city. He is not a kind or patient man. Maybe he treats the wealthy better. His guards would always keep the richer parts of Angmare safe. The poorer parts of the city are rarely visited by guards and most of those visits are predictable. Mercenary groups and gangs of orphan children run those back streets. Or used to. Sorry, my thoughts are wandering. Where was I?
Ah, Thane Morgan. I got the impression she was only carrying out King Dunnegan's orders. She established a tax of one gem per moon per citizen. She established basic laws and handed out jobs. Seeing how everyone was new, I had a completely fresh start. When the job of Constable came up, I wasn't sure if I wanted to volunteer. In a flash, I suddenly realized all the cruelty of the guards of Angmare did not have to travel here with me. If I were the law enforcer, I could do things differently. I volunteered for the job. I am also tasked with collecting the tax. I will handle that differently as well. I'd rather not have people beaten for not paying the tax, or just for being slow to pay it. Besides, one of the laws is that we cannot torture our own citizens. That’s probably for the best.
Thane Morgan said she would not likely come back. I have a feeling we don't want her to come back. I don't think she likes non-humans, which is the whole point of this town.
Unlike the Thane, most of the people here are unusually nice from my perspective. I know nothing about Fae, but Inkarra is interesting. We explored a little bit with Cassia. Inkarra often seems to hide when there is danger near. Or she could be out searching for herbs. We traded bandages I made for medicinal paste she made. Mutually beneficial arrangements are nothing new to me.
These lands are wild and untamed. Despite belonging to King Dunnegan, there are several groups who seem to have claim on them. One are kobolds. Ugly, little creatures. They showed up asking for gems and were quick to be hostile. We found a cave where they seemed to be workers or slaves for a human master. We had to kill him, but later, the kobolds seemed to have found another master or raised the original one back. I want to find out if he is the same person or a new one and why the kobolds view him as their master. Also, if the cave is a mine, it may be running out of gems or maybe it isn't a gem mine, which would explain why they were asking for gems.
Banshees are horrifying. Getting one's guts moved to the outside of one's body is not something I want to repeat.
There was one group of lizard-like people we fought, and another we seemed to make a peaceful connection with. The second group hunt on the land we now live on. They seemed to understand us, but didn't talk. We did manage to figure out they wanted pelts each moon in exchange for leaving us alone. Seems like paying off another gang to me, but we can't fight every race we encounter out here. If things work out, we may be able to trade other things with them. Mutually beneficial arrangements are preferred.
Not far from the town, there is some land claimed by Orcs. I don't think they care we are around as long as we stay off their land.
Don't trust a crying, old hag. Just such a person entered town at one point and attacked anyone who got near. She could spray some sort of acid that hurt. Hurt a lot. I have no idea what she was or what she wanted. She wouldn't talk to us, only cried.
We got a potion off the lizard people we fought with. Jean stupidly decided to drink it. He was not himself for a while. When he returned to his senses, he described a creature that seemed to match what some of the others said they heard on their way to Shawnee. A powerful creature that could not be stopped. It's troubling to say the least.
Esus, the god of magic arrived. I think I'd prefer the goddess Eris, personally. Esus said he felt magic here, from us. Because it was new he came to investigate. He offered us help, but at a price. I did not trust him, but Ector, a human, received a sigil on his sword that will let him kill the beast he heard and Jean saw through his vision. I don't mind as long as the price Esus demands later doesn't affect me. Deirdre also seemed to think it was bad to make deals with Esus.
Nirorneth, an elf woman, went and killed Ector. My second night as a constable, and I had to deal with attempted murder! Or maybe it was murder, I get these things confused. We saved Ector easily enough, but Nirorneth is not well. It's possible she's lying, but she may also be possessed by or controlled by something or someone else. The sight of Ector sends her into a rage. It's related to the sigil. We have her locked up until we can determine how to fix the problem. Deirdre and Melinda, both elves, talked to her and found out the sigil angers "the other elf" in Nirorneth. We hid the sword with the sigil. Ector can have it back if the beast it's meant to fight shows up. Deirdre and Melinda will continue to care for Nirorneth, but we cannot let her out for now. I don't like keeping her locked up, but I don't see an alternative at the moment.
I met Terran, another human from Angmare. He said his father was a mercenary who is now in prison. He is also a mercenary and may be a bit rough for the people here in Shawnee. I can relate to him, though. I understand him, at least. He may not be interested in joining the town guard, but he should be valuable to have around.
Our town council consists of two humans and an elf. Jean, Orion, and Aldia. Jean is the most outspoken and full of ideas. I think he means well, but it's hard to trust someone of so many words. As long as he stays within the law - making decisions with the full council - I am content.
Aldia, an elf, is typically busy keeping notes on the town's affairs for Thane Morgan or researching the elixir we need to cure a contagious mind sickness. I don't know what Orion does, but I'm sure it's important.
Our Captain of the Guard, Alexander Mackenzie, seems to be a competent man, and not at all like the guards from Angmare. He is probably still looking for more people to join the guard. I know he spends a lot of time out patrolling or training.
Our town priestess is Lydiah. If you need any spiritual advice, she is your best resource. If you have trouble finding her, she might be away praying to Myn or meditating.
There are other people here as well, sorry for not mentioning all of them. You'll just have to meet them for yourself. And remember, if anything, or anyone, tries to kill you. Die loudly.
